A Tool for Mapping Research Skills in Undergraduate Curricula - Gillian A Fraser, Anne C Crook and Julian R Park - Bioscience Education Journal, Vol. 9: June 2007

Abstract: There has been considerable interest recently in the teaching of skills to undergraduate students. However, existing methods for collating data on how much, where and when students are taught and assessed skills have often been shown to be time-consuming and ineffective. Here, we outline an electronic research skills audit tool that has been developed to map both transferable and discipline-specific skills teaching and assessment within individual modules, the results of which can be collated and analysed across entire degree programmes. The design and use of the audit tool is described in detail and a bioscience case study is presented to illustrate the types of data that can be collected. The audit tool has been designed as a time-effective way of collecting information on skills teaching and assessment, but also actively encourages staff to reflect on their teaching and learning practices. Conclusions are drawn about the practicalities of using the audit tool and its importance in both curriculum design and as a resource to encourage dialogue with graduate employers.

Research skills training for undergraduate researchers: the pedagogical approach of the STARS project - John A Finn and Anne C Crook - Bioscience Education Journal, Vol. 2: November 2003

Abstract: The Scientific Training by Assignment for Research Students (STARS) project comprises of an internet-based learning resource that has been designed to help undergraduate students develop a number of fundamental skills associated with conducting scientific research. In particular, it aims to improve the ability of students to plan, design, manage and execute scientific research whilst providing opportunities for formative assessment and rapid feedback. We describe the content and pedagogical approach adopted by STARS with a particular emphasis on its incorporation of the principles of experiential learning. We use our experience of designing the STARS resource to reflect more generally on both science education and the development of research skills in undergraduate degrees.

Career research skills and IT - Association for Careers Education and Guidance, UK, 2006
Introduction: Lesson plans for careers information research skills, including use of ICT and the Internet . These lesson plans have been written as part of the response to the Oxfordshire 14–19 careers education and guidance review. Their purpose is to help students at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 to develop the skills to enable them to make effective use of careers information using ICT and paper-based media. Most of the lessons include an element of ICT and some may benefit from the use of an interactive whiteboard (IWB).
